Vintage Slot Car Racing Is For Both Young And Old Fans
![]() |
What is vintage slot car racing? As with vintage car racing, slot car racing involves vintage cars and tracks. In slot car terms, vintage refers to slot car equipment from the 1960s. People born in that decade might not like the term vintage that is used for the slot cars. However, with the quick advance of the technological time scale, the vintage slot car racing items can be considered positively ancient! If you compare cars and computers from the 1960s to today's versions, you'll see why they are considered so old.
The 1960s is called the Golden Age of vintage slot car racing. It is the decade in which slot car racing first became available. Some sources place its origins as late as the 1950s. The point is that kids who first began vintage slot car racing back then are now rediscovering the sport. As adults, they now have more money and are bringing out their old vintage slot car racing tracks, and buying expensive new cars and tracks on which to race. They are fulfilling a part of their second childhood by finally being able to buy the slot cars they could have never afforded as kids.
There was no standard model scale involved in what is now called vintage slot car racing. Racers often built their own cars, using electric motors from discarded appliances, motors from model trains, or other machines. The car chassis was often carved from wood. Some of the earliest systems were based on the Lionel model train O-gauge track size. These vintage slot car racing events must have been very exciting to watch. Few of the cars matched in size or shape. Each car had a different type of motor, wheels, and body. There is little doubt that half the fun of vintage slot car racing was the crashes!
Where can you find vintage slot car racing equipment? Try the attics or basements of your relatives. Those old boxes of tracks and cars might be considered to be junk, and your relative will be grateful for you to haul them away. Flea markets are a good source too, as are online auctions and racing sites specializing in vintage slot car racing sets. It takes a true slot car fan to appreciate the find of a decades-old vintage slot car racing set. The owner probably has little idea of the worth of the set and may consider it to be junk. The racing fan can probably get the vintage slot car racing set for free, or for a ridiculously low price.
