A Beginner's Guide To Slot Car 1/24 Racing
![]() |
Slot car 1/24 racing refers to races conducted using slot cars which are 1:24 scale. Slot cars are scale-model cars which come in different scales. Other scales include the 1:32 and HO scale. In slot car 1/24 racing, only cars that meet the 1/24 scale definition are allowed. The racing track has the same scale, so that slot car 1/24 racing can be performed properly. Using different scale cars during slot car 1/24 racing might result in damage to the track or the slot cars.
The numbers in slot car 1/24 racing refer to the size of the slot car as compared to the size of a real racing car. 24 inches on a real sized car are equivalent to 1 inch on the scale-model slot car. Therefore, a real car that is 12 feet or 144 inches long would be only 144 divided by 24 or 6 inches long in 1/24 scale. For comparison, a 6 foot tall person would be 6 divided by 24, or 0.25 ft (3 inches) tall. Therefore, in slot car 1/24 racing, a 3 inch tall driver would fit into a 6 inch long slot car. The 1/24 ratio in slot car 1/24 racing is also known as the half-inch scale. That is because one foot or 12 inches is represented by 12 divided by 24 or one-half scale inches.
Slot car 1/24 racing has the largest cars in slot racing. The same 12 foot car in 1/32 scale would be 4.5 inches long. In HO scale or 1/64 scale, the car would be only 2.25 inches long. The larger size of the cars and tracks may be why slot car 1/24 racing is so popular. The racing field is larger and more exciting, and so are the crashes! When buying a beginner's slot car set, try to see a slot car 1/24 racing set in action. This is especially helpful if it is next to racing tracks of other scales. Children who are the recipients of slot car 1/24 racing sets often prefer the larger cars, but it can't hurt to let them see the other options.
There are both amateur and professional racing circuits for slot car 1/24 racing. Amateurs include anyone playing with a slot car 1/24 racing track in their playroom or basement. Professional racers take their slot car 1/24 racing very seriously. They often build custom 1:24 scale cars, including special motors, wheels, and tires. These competitions draw large crowds of scale-model racing fans. The excitement of the small cars speeding around the track at amazing speeds is spellbinding. Regardless of which class of racer you are, slot car 1/24 racing is an excellent introduction to the sport of slot car racing.
